Autumn

I can’t believe winter is already creeping up on us! The beginning of autumn was last week, right?

“Why are we awake?”

Sunrise starts getting later and suddenly no one (including me) wants to get up in the morning. The days are short enough I hardly get to let the sheep in or out except on weekends, which makes me sad.

I had planned to make a blog post a few weeks (or is it months now?) ago about the volunteer pumpkin vine and how odd it is that the sheep never eat them before they’re ripe.

I took pictures and everything, but the next day…

They just have to keep me guessing. Heaven forbid they become predictable!

We got the barn cleaned out for winter, and the stack of pavers we piled outside the barn became Clover’s new favorite Splendid Game in the evenings when they’re waiting to be let into the barn.

“I’m the king of this very tiny hill!”

Stand On Things is an old favorite of his mother Duchess, I assume it must be genetic.

“This is my cinderblock and no one else can stand on it!”

Blue continues to believe he should be the center of attention at all times and also in the middle of anything his humans are doing.

“Why’d you go in there with the sheep without me???”

It still sometimes takes me off guard to see a gray dog instead of black waiting for me at the gate. But it is still much less sad than no dog at all.

He parks himself under the table when we’re eating dinner.

“I am protecting the rug from any dropped food!”

He helped put up the Christmas tree.

“I am in charge of inspecting everything!

And walked around the house crying yesterday evening about being unloved and neglected until I sat on the floor to hold his bone for him to chew it, only for him to fall straight to sleep mid-chew.

“Holding the bone myself too exhausting, must nap… zzz…”

He always wants everyone in the same room, including Echo. If Echo falls asleep and everyone moves to a different room, Blue will double back and wake Echo up and try to get him to come too. He will also wake Echo up by nibbling his neck and ears until Echo snaps at him to cut it out, then run to us wailing that Echo was horribly mean to him for no reason at all and he is being bullied, like we didn’t just see him annoy Echo on purpose.

Echo does not like being woken up, and has started hanging out in the kitchen when he gets too annoyed because Blue still won’t walk on the tile to follow him in there. I tell him Blue is still under two years old, so he’s allowed to be a little bit annoying.

“Well I’m over twelve and I’m allowed to sleep as much as I like.

I think it’s probably good for him to get up and move around more than he would by himself, even if he is grumpy about it.

“Zzz…”

Poor puppy hardly has any toys to play with. I just hope the sheep don’t start teaching him any Splendid Games to keep himself entertained.
